Below is a short introduction to some of the key staff members of our Baramul team

Gerry Harvey - Owner

Gerry HarveyDynamic and famously down-to-earth, Gerry Harvey’s name is synonymous with retail success as co-founder, chairman and major shareholder of the fast-growing Harvey Norman integrated retail, franchise and property group with turnover of over $5 billion.

With over 1000 horses including some 300 well-bred matrons at his historic Baramul Stud in the NSW Widden Valley, Harvey is among Australia’s biggest and most successful owner-breeders, recently extending his bloodstock portfolio to part-ownership of blue-ribbon stud farm Vinery in the Hunter Valley. In 2008 he took his breeding interests across the Tasman to New Zealand where he purchased Westbury Stud.

Under Harvey’s guidance, the spectacular property Baramul has enjoyed a resurgence as a leading consignor at the Magic Millions sale.

Gerry’s love of the thoroughbred also extends to racing. He has at least 120 racehorses in work year round with over 50 top class trainers Australia wide, including David Hayes, Mark Kavanagh, Chris Waller and Mick Price.

Group 1 winners Polar Success, Lotteria, Savabeel and Aloha are among horses Harvey has bred or owned, along with this seasons Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis and the ATC Oaks winner Royal Descent.

Paul Thompson - Stud Manager

Paul came to Baramul Stud with a lifetime in horses emanating from his early days in Pony Club, representative polocrosse, camp drafting and stock horse shows. Paul has worked in the Thoroughbred industry since 1987, working for such industry icons as Les Irwin and Dr Phil Redman.

Seeking experience, Paul travelled overseas working on studs in the USA and overseeing preparation of yearlings by stallions such as Danzig (USA), Seattle Slew USA) and Alleged (USA). While there, Paul attended clinics offered by Monty Roberts, Pat Parelli and Ray Hunt. This, combined with his early childhood horse experiences, provided Paul with a greater understanding of horse behaviour.

On returning from overseas, Paul worked for Fred Kelly at Newhaven Stud, then moving on to Riverdene Stud before becoming Stud Manager at Baramul Stud for the late Sir Tristan Antico.

When Gerry Harvey purchased Baramul Stud in August 1999 he entrusted Paul to manage and develop the stud to what it is today.

Paul is actively involved in the daily outdoor running of the farm and enjoys sharing his vast skills and experience with his fellow work mates, ensuring Baramul is a premium environment for both horse and handler.

Claire Bird with Sunline

Claire’s love of horses started when she was 12 years old, when she used to stay with her oldest sister who lived across the road from Fielding Racecourse. During her time at McKee’s, Claire was lucky enough to become the full time strapper and trackrider for Champion mare Sunline. Claire travelled with Sunline on numerous trips to Australia, Hong Kong twice and also to Dubai and gained valuable experience during this time.

On Sunline’s retirement she relocated to Melbourne taking up a position with Racing Victoria Limited as a Workplace Trainer and Assessor focusing on stablehands and trackriders.

After 4 years in this position, Claire came to Sydney and spent 12 months working for the horse racing channel TVN as a producer and presenter. During this period Claire met Gerry Harvey who approached her about a position as his Racing Manager – a position which she has been since November 2007.
